Prof. Amal Kumar Raychaudhuri-School Life

Prof. Amal Kumar Raychaudhuri(অমল কুমার রায়চৌধুরী )

(1924-2005)

                       

                        Prof. A. K. Raychaudhuri was not only a great astronomer but also a  great professor as well as a great man. Today  I  will tell you what      made A. K. Raychaudhuri a great professor. His passion for the truth , love for struggle and his hatred for achieving a goal without an effort was well known among his students.

         

Tirthapati School ( South Calcutta )

From his childhood he liked to solve mathematics's problem. He joined Tirthapati School in South Calcutta which is now known as famous Hindu School. According to him, he was not a very talented student in his school life but he liked to take challenge to solve mathematics's problem. In one fine morning , the Headmaster of Tirthapati School took class and solved a Mathematics's problem. Amal Raychaudhudri stood up and said that he can solve this problem using another easy method . Even he solved the problem in a very easy way infront of all other students.Then Headmaster astonished and inspite of appreciated it , in the next issue of school magazine he put it that,' Amal of class IX suggested me this method '.

         

       

Presidency College (Heart of Calcutta ) 

His father was a school mathematics's teacher though he got 1st class in mathematics but he unable to get success in practical life. So he suggested him to take another practical subject. Though Amal Kumar Raychaudhuri liked mathematics but he choosed physics and took admission to Presidency College in 1940.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

Because of August moment and the World War (II), the environment of Calcutta was fearful. There was a rumour that at any time Hitler can attack Calcutta.  A panic situation was created at that time in Calcutta .So     his family shifted to Barisal ( now in Bangladesh) from Calcutta but his child-      mind enjoyed it. He thought that will be very enjoyable to see bomb explotion in Calcutta.

       

         

             Amal Raychaudhuri came back to Calcutta and completed his B.Sc. examination. As always he excelled in theory. In 1945 he finished his M.Sc. hopping to support his growing interest in research he applied for a research scholarship at the Indian Association of Cultivation of Science (IACS) . His dream of engaging theoretical research faded when he was assigned the unfamiliar role of an experimentalist and he failed to achieve anything substantial and after four years of work Raychaudhuri lost his assistantship...
